************************************************************************ DDN MGT Bulletin : 9302 DISA DDN Defense Communications System 12 Nov 1993 Published by: DDN Network Info Center (NIC@NIC.DDN.MIL) (800) 365-3642 DEFENSE DATA NETWORK MANAGEMENT BULLETIN The DDN MANAGEMENT BULLETIN is distributed online by the DDN Network Information Center under DISA contract as a means of communicating official policy, procedures and other information of concern to management personnel at DDN facilities. Back issues may be read through the TACNEWS server ("@n" command at the TAC) or may be obtained by FTP (or Kermit) from the NIC.DDN.MIL host [192.112.36.5] using login="anonymous" and password="guest". The pathname for bulletins is ddn-news/ddn-mgt-bulletin-nn.txt (where "nn" is the bulletin number). ************************************************************************ Update on the MILNET Transition to BGP BGP Cutover Less Critical ========================= DDN MGT Bulletin 130 stated that all DDN clients must convert from EGP to BGP protocol by 1 October 1993. This was based on the growth in the number of MILNET gateways advertised in routing updates. This number was approaching the 510 gateway limit imposed by EGP. With the downsizing and reconfiguration of the MILNET, the number of gateways has dropped, and it no longer appears that the 510 limit will be reached under the current MILNET architecture. As a result, there is no longer a critical need to transition from EGP to BGP. However, BGP remains the recommended external gateway protocol and subscribers should maintain the goal of converting to BGP: 1) It is a more efficient protocol which reduces network traffic. 2) It is more robust, better able to detect and prevent routing loops. 3) It will prepare subscribers for upcoming network architectures which will likely eliminate EGP. At this time DISA has not established a mandatory BGP implementation deadline. When a new deadline is established, we will notify all users at the earliest possible date. Please refer questions concerning this matter to Capt Lent, DISA/UTDS, DSN 222-2757/COMM (703) 692-2757 or E-Mail address lentj@cc.ims.disa.mil. Required Software/Firmware Versions =================================== GateD users should run 3.0Alpha software or later. Cisco users should refer to "Notes for Cisco Users", below. ROUTER/GATEWAY ADMINISTRATORS FOR NON-CISCO OR NON-GateD ROUTERS SHOULD CONTACT THE APPROPRIATE VENDOR(S) TO DETERMINE THE REQUIRED SOFTWARE VERSION TO DO BGP. Notes for Cisco Users ===================== The following information is provided by cisco systems: The following recommendations will assure interoperability between Cisco "customer premise" routers and the MILNET BBN T/20 backbone nodes. STAYING WITH 9.0.x SOFTWARE FOR CSC/3 BASED SYSTEMS WILL HELP AVOID THE MEMORY ISSUES CURRENTLY BEING EXPERIENCED ON SOME CSC/3 SYSTEMS running 9.1.x. System Type Cisco software revision --------------------------- ----------------------- CSC/3 68020 CPU w/ 4MB RAM 9.0.5 (or later) CSC/4 68040 CPU w/ 16MB RAM 9.1.4(3) (or later) APPROXIMATE #OF IP ROUTES WHICH CAN BE HELD IN MEMORY: System Type Total IP Routing Table Entries ------------------------ ------------------------------ CSC/3 4MB RAM 9.0.X SW 4000-5000 CSC/3 4MB RAM 9.1.X SW 1000-2000 CSC/4 16MB RAM 9.1.X SW 40,000 CLNP/CLNS routing table entries can be significantly larger, hence less entries may be accommodated. CISCO SYSTEMS STRONGLY RECOMMENDS THAT ALL CUSTOMERS UPGRADE TO CSC/4 68040 W/ 16MB RAM AND THE MOST CURRENT SOFTWARE RELEASE IN THE 9.1 TREE (CURRENTLY 9.1.7) SOFTWARE UPGRADES MAY REQUIRE MICROCODE UPGRADES FOR ROUTER INTERFACE CARDS. Software upgrades and microcode upgrades are free of charge to cisco maintenance customers or customers under standard warranty (90 days). CSC/4 CPU card upgrade can be accomplished via ordering: Part# CSC/4U @ $3600 (GSA schedule GSOOK-91-AGS-5016 PS07 (expires 3/31/94)) (SOFTWARE NOT INCLUDED). Software upgrades for non-maintenance customers is $495.00 per chassis (GSA schedule GSOOK-91-AGS-5016 PS07 (expires 3/31/94)). Microcode upgrades for non-maintenance customers is $500.00 per interface card. Contact cisco systems for additional upgrade information and specific microcode upgrade part numbers.
